The line runs from Munich Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) to the twin town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, at the foot of the Alps, near the border with Austria.

The line is one of the oldest in Germany, parts of which were in operation as far back as 1854.

The first full route test run by an electrically hauled train, took place on the night of the 19th/20th February 1925, from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Munich Hauptbahnhof.

This was closely followed by the introduction of electric passenger trains running on the route just 3 days later.

The Garmisch-Partenkirchen line is served by Regionalbahn trains.

There are regular trains every hour, with additional services during peak times. Each journey time is around 1 hour 20 minutes.

At the weekends there are additional Intercity-Express services, some of which continue onto Innsbruck, Austria

The northern section of the route includes 13 S-Bahn stations that service the S-6 Commuter service from Munich
